Tadley is a town in the north of Hampshire close to the border with Berkshire. Like towns and villages all over the British Isles men flocked to the flag during the Great War, many did not return. This web site intends to try and look a bit closer at the names that appear on the memorial in my home town.

Basingstoke can be seen emerging at the bottom of the picture, with Newbury at the top left and Reading just above the top right hand corner. Although Tadley is now a fair sized town, the 1911 census gives it's population at a mere 1200. |
This document contains information relating to the men of Tadley who gave their lives during the Great War. Names taken from the Tadley war memorial near St Paul's church, as reproduced in the book "Tadley fact and fable".
The Commonwealth Wargrave Commission website register was used to provide the details of the named individuals. Not all the men named on the memorial have been sourced at the time of writing, this is due to a lack of information on the website entry with which to match to the individual. Only the entries which are definitely linked have been selected. These features include references to Tadley or surrounding villages or by a decoration award. Where I have not been sure, I have left out an entry with a view to using another source to positively identify the individual.
During the last few years I have received assistance from many generous sources which have allowed me to provide data on all but one individual named on the memorial - Sjt L Rampton who could also be the Leonard Rampton named on the Baughurst & Heath End memorial. At present he is proving to be a little shy in coming forward!!! Until now – use of the census records and pensions data from the National Archives have finally provided vital information about this man. Use the link on the table below to find out more.
The entries from the commission's site also include details of the cemetery, its location and other relevant information, I have separated these into different sections. This is to save space where one or more men are buried in the same place. The cemetery reference number on the personal entry indicates the location of the cemetery information in that section.
